Understanding the nuances of coat colors 

 

The red merle is not a solid red, but rather a 'brown mottled' coat.

Similarly, the blue merle is a 'black mottled' coat.

The black tri-color is a solid black, while the red tri-color is a solid brown.

A range of variations

However, these four main colors can be found in a multitude of shades, depending on the presence or absence of white and tan (a copper color typically found on the cheeks and legs). The amount of these secondary colors greatly influences the final appearance of the coat. 

 

The markings: a unique signature

It is the combination and distribution of colors on the coat that make up the 'markings' of each dog. These markings are unique to each Miniature American Shepherd, just like a fingerprint.
