Differences between the Miniature American Shepherd and the Australian Shepherd
I was a breeder of Australian Shepherds for many years before welcoming my first Miniature American Shepherd. While the two breeds look very similar from a physical perspective, there are still some differences between them.

Size and Weight
The most obvious difference is the size. The Australian Shepherd is a medium-sized dog, while the Miniature American Shepherd is a small-sized breed.

Australian Shepherd Standard Miniature American Shepherd Standard
• Females : 46 to 53 cm at the withers • Females : 33 to 43,5 cm at the withers
• Males : 51 to 58 cm at the withers • Males : 35 to 46 cm at the withers
• 18 to 25 kg • 7 to 15 kg

Energy Level

Both breeds are energetic and require daily exercise. However, the Australian Shepherd tends to have a slightly higher energy level than the Miniature American Shepherd.
Grooming

The coat of the Australian Shepherd is generally longer and thicker than that of the Miniature American Shepherd. It is also more abundant due to the larger size of the dog. This means that the Australian Shepherd requires more regular brushing to prevent tangles and also sheds more hair during its molting period.
Temperament

Both breeds are generally intelligent, loyal, and affectionate. However, the Australian Shepherd can be more independent and stubborn than the Miniature American Shepherd.
The Miniature American Shepherd is a bit more sensitive than the Australian Shepherd, with more of a "small dog" mindset.
